Progress

So on October 23rd I went out between the hours of 11pm and 2am to begin recording. This was also a chance to get familiar with _DSC0899the Zoom H2n. The recordings overall are fantastic quality and are a great start to the moulding of my soundscape. The recordings I managed to get are as follows:

  • University Railway Bridge
  • Architecture to Engine Shed
  • Engine shed to Tower Bar
  • Bottom of highstreet (Shoe Zone)
  • Town Centre
  • Through town to bottom of Steep Hill (Past Clubs)
  • Morrisons/McDonalds Roundabout
  • Flyover

As it was a student night at engine shed I managed to get some good recordings of the student night life around the city. I alsomanaged to record a 15 minute track at the Morrisons roundabout – it was quiet with the sound of few cars going past. It is really interestingto listen to, quite soothing. This week I am going out to do _DSC0907much more recording. Tomorrow I plan to go all around town and even up the hill if the weather is good.

As well as getting on with recording I have been in contact with Hazel at the gallery again and we are finalising a date for the showcase night of my work – how exciting! I have also been thinking about publicity for myself and have created my own business card which includes the following details:

The cards should arrive in the next few weeks and I will have these at the showcase night for people to take along with a CD of my work which I am working on at the moment.

Zoom

Today my Zoom H2n arrived! It’s a neat bit of kit. I’ve ordered an accessory pack to go with it which includes a wind shield, tripod, remote and a case. I’m going to spend this weekend learning how to … Continue reading

The Idea..

Over the last week I have developed an idea for this terms Audio Project 1. I very much enjoy creating electronic music and had a lot of fun with soundscapes in my first year here at Lincoln. And so I thought why not combine the two and make a hybrid sound/music scape. I like to be very subtle when it comes to writing music, just something in the background that you could relax to or not even notice. But I feel this project will bring me out of my comfort zone and allow me to explore the dynamics of the sonic world a little more.
My initial idea was to go out in to Lincoln and record as many sounds as possible, bring them back into Logic Pro 9 and incorporate them into a sound/music scape. After my first tutorial today I was given the idea to do 24 hours worth of recording around each part of Lincoln (Top of the hill, bottom of the hill, around town, West Common etc). This then made me think about the dynamic of Lincoln as during the day you can barely move through the town centre but then in the evening Lincoln is dead. Ergo, it is possible to capture two sides of Lincoln from a sound point of view as the soundtracks will be completely different. I’m particularly looking forward to recording the evening/early morning side to Lincoln as I’m sure these recordings will make interesting atmos tracks which can be manipulated to make an eerie ambient atmosphere.
Two big things that stand out for me in Lincoln are the Cathedral and the busy train line. So going up to the Cathedral and perhaps getting the chance to record the organ, as an example, would add another aspect to my track. With the trains these can be beneficial in a musical sense in a few ways as I always find when I hear the trains go through at night they create this eerie atmosphere. As well as this they produce a continuous rhythm which ties in well with the musical aspect and can bring a listener along on a journey through the soundscape.

Luckily, at the end of all this hard work I will have somewhere to showcase my track; The Little Red Gallery in Lincoln. I emailed a few galleries in the area and thankfully they got back in contact. This is really exciting for me as I’ve always liked the idea of creating a sound instalment and showcasing it somewhere. Even though this is a university project I’m treating it as though I’m out in the real world because one day I could be doing this for a living.
I am currently in contact with Hazel Venn, the owner of The Little Red Gallery and will hopefully be going up in the next few days to have a look around and get to know the gallery and Hazel a little better.

And so the idea is still a work in progress, but an exciting one at that.
